I don't know if it's the upcoming Valentines Day 2k9 or Chelsey's film school applications but I've been all guts, blood and glory since watching the final scene of The Hunger last Sunday. A tiny bit of wiki research went a long way when I discovered that a spin-off television series was created in '97. Turns out Bowie hosted 21 episodes after the original host, General Zod from Superman, called it quits. Each episode was based on a different plot with "themes of self-destructive desire and obsession, soft-core erotica, cannibalism, vampires, sex and poison." BAD-ASS. and strikingly similar to my life as of late.

Lovely 2008 left me with yet another big 'ol slap in the face -- making me (and 20 other more talented employees at JPG Magazine) JPG-less. With hardly weeks to spare on my economic situation I must find a job. A real one this time. My current recovery plan is to spend the next week watching the Discovery Channel and Gossip Girl cursing the invention of cover letters and starving to death.

Despite my recent downfalls, I had a great December/January with many a friendly visit. Now I'm left wishing everyone would stay in one goddamn place for once. And that I had the final say in picking that place. And it'd be here, in San Francisco.

And that they'd all have to be my (love) slaves ... muahahahaha.

SFMOMA's newest exhibit "Brought to Light: Photography and the Invisible" is really something. The always awesome curators of MOMA put together a sweet show chronicling the advent of photography and the importance it played in developing observational knowledge in astronomy (the first telescopic photos of the surface of the moon) to the anatomics of biological life to ghostly apparitions.

What really struck a chord with me was their collection of Spirit Photography. I don't know what it is about these old timey long exposures-- but I'm officially obsessed with silly shots of ectoplasms and transparent handlebar moustaches. Despite the obvious falsity of it all, most of these shots are plain creepy.

I've spent hours browsing the interweb and found some seriously legit sites that have done an excellent job of archiving a these photos (not to mention some excellent seance stories).

Here are a few from the American Museum of Photography:

Mrs. Mary Marshall (1930) The ghost of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle manifests in some chick's boogers. Take that Sherlock.

Mrs. Dorothy Henderson

Mrs. Henderson is the medium in a small seance conducted by the Marylebone Spiritualist Association. (Apparently she volunteered in many of the assoc. seances-- what a pasttime).

The Marylebone Assoc. was just one of many dedicated to the exploration of spiritualism. After the end of the Civil War the belief in spiritualism grew when families wished to gain contact with loved ones killed in battle.

On a side note: this reminds me of a Twilight Zone Episode I just watched called The Passerby. TZ's melodramatic Civil War era ghost story has a twist ending that rivals M. Night Shamanamanmanan's weak attempt to shock in The Sixth Sense. Now I need a rainy day to curl up and watch all of Gone With the Wind in one sitting.

William Hope, founder of the Crew Circle, picked up Spirtualism after "accidentally" capturing the image of a ghost while photographing a friend. He then built up a steady business capturing the WWI deceased. Years later he was caught using glass plates to falsify the materialization of spirits in his photographs- oopsies. The National Media Museum has a great Flickr set of William Hope's spirit photographs. Check it out.

After a 3 hour post-yoga studio nap I arose for a walk down Valencia. This resulted in: (1) bok choy (1) head of broccoli, chocolate milk (three liquor stores before I could find something other than nesquik), and Tales of the City. I also spent my money for BART this week on a dress I dont need that some awesome old lady on the corner of 20th/Valencia convinced me I had to buy. It was what she called "Valencia Style." For some reason I was sold on a description that would typically discourage me.

Tillandsias and Crispy Noodles

Someone asked me the other day what my favorite thing to do in San Francisco was- being that I just moved here and all. I rummaged my thoughts for a few things trying to pick just one and came up with... a list!

There's something about sharing lists with ya'll that makes my life seem a lot tidier and easier to describe, which I love:

1. Mysterious walks at night with no destination that most importantly involve nothing more than peering into magnificent cozy looking apartments with great windows.
2. Discovering new nooks and crannies.
3. Solo nighttime bike rides to Golden Gate Park and sometimes to the beach.
4. All the tiny movie theaters that I have yet to experience.
5. Paxton Gate and my ever-growing collection of Tillandsias.
6. Leaving the Embarcadero St. BART station with a destination of bagels/orange juice + my comfy desk at 8020 + the latest ep. of This American Life.
7. Dolores Park + Mexi Coke and sometimes brie and baguettes from Bi Rite.
8. Crispy noodles and spongy tofu stir-fry at Diego's.
9. Sitting on the floor at Amoeba and finding $2 records.
10. Browsing sidewalk sales in the Mission/anywhere.
10 1/2. The new California Academy of Sciences

coveted windows, tree, and second story porch in Hayes Valley.

Best of all- I'm moving upstairs on the first into a new bedroom with a) windows b) an ornamental fireplace c) less noise. Things are looking up! Literally! Hopefully I'll have a post with pictures up of my new room in the near future.

on that note... it's been way too long since I've listened to Suedehead.

I "overheard" Radiohead playing at Golden Gate Park tonight (the first live at nighttime show ever in the history of concerts in the Park... or something like that). I sat across one of the lake/ponds by the Richmond and watched the stage lights bounce off of the water. Needless to say it was way more magical than being surrounded by a million festival-goers and paying FAR TOO MUCH money for a ticket.

Speaking of dollar billz... I think I'm going to end up splurging on this. Worth it? Yes.

Tomorrow morning: Trouble Coffee and toast, and coconuts (?) in the Sunset- and the beach of course.

Found this three-dimensional fog map on sfgate.com today. Way cool. I think I can learn to love the foggy summer days here- especially magical at night when the moisture sparkles and swirls under street lamps. This is something I should record with my digital if I ever find the battery charger for it.

I think I'm going to do some craft oriented exploring today. I finally found a table on clist so I don't have to sew on the floor anymore. Meaning that once I pick it up I'll be busting out the singer and finally altering the piles of XXL dresses I've accumulated from [three years of] Tuesday nights at R.A.D.S.

A few working project ideas:
- crochet air plant hangers
- headbands with hat tulle
- shelves for my sewing table
- cactus terrarium
- curtains
- bubble hemmed dresses
- *name embroidered bibs from scrap fabric [for all those meals that Diego, Ray, Chelsey and Chesley and I have been eating on the floor and spilling- or maybe I've just been spilling]

Next thing I know we're in some yuppy/hippy/redneck hybrid of a place called Sebastopol. Their Whole Foods salad bar didn't have veggie bacon-bits OR dried cranberries (ghetto). There was a farmers market across the street and a little boy got hit by a car.

I've been having a lot of sordid-like nightmares lately revolving around smoke and flame damaged dwellings, be-headings, and obese ex-boyfriends asking for my hand in marriage (yeah, I dunno).

At the same time I've been coming across A LOT of fabulous Pismo-house related images on my computer. Some are REALLY old and REALLY (kind of) embarrassing.
